Our Canadian Medical System Has Turned Into A Psycho Circus!
By Sandford Tuey
Here’s what’s wrong with the Royal Columbian hospital in New Westminster!
I have had major medical issues since my spinal surgery at Kelowna hospital back in September 2014. Botched it up and I now have Gastroparesis and require a power wheelchair for mobility. There is no accountability in our medical professionals. They can do anything and get away with it. They usually blame everything on the patients, even if it was their fault.
On June second my Burnaby Home Health Care Nurse arrived to change my Port-o-Cath needle and tubing outside my chest, not the tubing inserted into my heart. Burnaby Home Health Care forced me to allow them to change the needle and tubing four times a month, as it IS their Protocol.. Even though I warned them that changing it every week would cause an infection and risk my life. They forced me any way to change it every Friday. On June 2, the RN came over and took the needle and outer tubing out and refused to insert a new one in again. She was protecting the city’s liability as she (without any tests) told me my IAD device (Port-o-Cath) was infected and it could spread to my heart and I could die. I offered to do the proper tests to ensure her ‘guess’ was fact, but she would not listen. She never put the new needle in and I could not inject I.V. Gravol.
This forced me to go to the Royal Columbian hospital to get an I.V. put into my arm so I could get injections of Gravol when I become nauseated. Without Gravol, I start to get nausea and vomit. After vomiting for four days, I have nothing left in my stomach and I start to vomit up blood. I wanted to prevent this horrible feeling anyway I could. Imagine being ‘Hung Over’ every day, all day, for over three years and you understand Gastroparesis. I don’t even get to be drunk or party first.
Both my Renal doctors and my GP prescribed for me to have a Port-o-Cath reinserted into my right side of my chest and tubes running directly into my heart. This is after they must rip out the previous device inserted into the left side of my chest with tubes leading into my heart. When the Home Care nurse un-snaped the needle and outer tubing, she refused to put a new one in. I became scared and yelled at the nurse, that she had no idea what can happen to me if I do not inject I.V. Gravol. She didn’t care, She was more concerned about her liability.
I could not go to the Burnaby hospital because they don’t have a Renal Department and I could not have dialysis there. I expected a two or three day stay in RCH and then return home. But a Dr. Idiot vetoed the three approving doctors recommendations and day-after-day I was told bullshit. When I was finally informed why and who was stalling this important minor surgery, I demanded to talk with her. I finally got to meet this fat, stupid idiot doctor who had the power to over-rule my doctor’s decisions.
This inept doctor said she wanted me to try Andozitron(sp) and Mazerpan(sp) first. That was the moment I knew she had not read my computer medical file. She kept talking over my answers to her questions and this irritates anyone. I called her a “bloody idiot” and she mumbled and suggested I try Gravol pills. I couldn’t believe it. I loudly advised her to go back and do her job and review my medical file, because if she had, she would see that my retired doctor (my GP in Penticton) comfirmed the need for me to have I.V. Gravol injections) because I became tolerant of Gravol pills. The look on her face was priceless. She obviously had never had a patient tear a couple strips off her before (in front of nurses and other doctors). She was so upset that she called hospital security on me.
When the hospital public address system announced there was a ‘Code White’ in progress at the Emergency Overflow, three big men in uniforms showed up in front of me and had to look down on me in my power wheelchair. One asked if I was being violent, I chuckled, “Yeah, I’m going to punch people in the kneecaps.” Sitting in the power wheelchair only allowed me to punch up to a person’s kneecap. I showed my BC Security Guard License valid until the end of 2017. I handed it to the supervisor, who recognized me from doing security gigs at the Thunderbird Stadium. Idiot doctor expected for security to haul me off hospital property, but instead, two went back to their main office and the leader and I went for a friendly walk together. The look on idiot doctor’s face was ‘priceless!’!
Now remember, I was in a ten foot by ten foot curtained cubicle for what turned out to be two weeks and a half day, due to this incompetent doctor playing with my life and costing me more time then it should have! All I wanted to do is go home to my wife and disabled veteran lifestyle (which is far more appealing than waiting unnecessarily in a hospital in unacceptable conditions and having to eat cafeteria (reheated) meals I would never eat at home due to my diet restrictions.
In Emergency Overflow, I was surround by about 12 other ten foot by Ten foot curtained off cubicles with a host of Psycho Circus patients: 1) a girl beside me in her cubicle was screaming for days, as she was going through drug withdrawal. 2) A male dementia patient tried to climb in my bed around 03:00 startling me big time. 3) On the other side of my curtained off cubicle was an elderly, grumpy woman, who was diagnosed with ‘MRSA’ (a superbug). She was instructed to wear gloves and an infection robe if she went outside her cubicle, but she never did, and no one would do or say anything about this. This woman was spreading infection throughout this ward. I had to jump on my power wheelchair and go out past the Emergency, Ward up an elevator 3 floors, to use the Renal washrooms, since less patients use them.
I describe my ordeal as being in a ‘PSYCHO CIRCUS!!’ .
